What does the writing on my tyres mean?

 

While the writing may look mysterious its actually pretty simple.

Lets take a look at the example here: 165/65R14 79T

165 - This is basically the width of the tyre.

65 - This is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the width of the tyre.

R14 - This is the diameter of the tyre.

79 - This is the tyres load capacity.

T - This is the maximum speed the tyre is rated to. In this case 118 Mph or 190 Km/H.

Essentially for the majority of people all you need to know when ordering tyres is the first three sets of numbers eg. 165/65/R14.

The rest of it gets needlessly technical and doesn't apply in most cases for everyday driving. For those who want to know though, here are the load index's and speed rating tables:
